When you go to the furnace and press E on it a ui will pop up.
At first you will be making copper bars with this but it will go into different bars once you level up.
Now to make a bar you must have at least 2 copper ore which you can get from mining seen in the mining page.Once you have all the requirements you will be able to make a bar and it will pop out a bar into the storage box like this.
Once you have this bar you have done it that is the basics of metalworking.
The second way to make bars is using the mining furnace
This furnace can be deployed and will need 1 coal and 2 ore in it to workOnce placed into the furnace it will start to smelt and make a bar then once a bar is made it will look like this.
Each will cost a varying amount of supplies to craft.
You will also use bars in gunmaking.
Another use for the bars is to sell them.
This is the tools npc found at hardware store.

2.Preparing!
When getting ready to Metalwork you should first find yourself a location that is safe to metal work in such as a warehouse. A good location can be found here also make sure you have to use it when metal working.

3. Making bars
When making bars you must deploy and put all of your factory pieces together it should look something a bit like this.
